Element emerged from a range of experiments that started to surround the theme of rain, social connection and shape transformation. In this group project I worked on implementing sustainability, bringing all experiments together and being a driving force for realization and bringing the team together. It was a deep dive into materials, production and making that sustainable.
Element is a transparent foldable rain hood that can be worn over your clothes. It facilitates social connection by giving you the ability to connect your hood with another person and walk underneath one big hood. Element uses electronics to transform the gloomy weather into colourful art. When you walk in the rain the hood will detect the raindrops which will generate a painting-like visual. When you connect the hood with someone else you will receive the personal colour of their hood, which will then be added to your artwork. Once you are home, you can place your hood on the holder and scan your phone to receive your artwork. In this way, you can see through the colours if you haven’t met your friends in a while.
Through Element, we are challenging the way we see rain, by highlighting the intimacy it offers, and by creating a product that invites you to have social connections while it’s raining.
